Measurement V

In this Semester 5, it is special that we have 2 lecturers in this measurement V module (QSB 60704). This module had separated into two subjects. Mr. Simon Chee Wai Meng has covered the civil engineering while Ms. Laura has covered building services. This is a 4 credit hours module. The civil engineering module will cover the measurement of environment protection and enhancement, geotechnical works (retaining wall), prestressed concrete, rail tracks and earthworks. Besides that, the building services module will cover the measurement of cold water plumbing, sanitary fittings, electrical services, fire protection services and air-condition & ventilation systems.

learning outcomes

Through this module, I had learnt to write the clauses for civil engineering works by using MyCESMM instead of using SMM2. MyCESMM covers all the specifications and measurement unit of civil engineering work. I also evaluate the relationship between Specifications, Drawings and Bill of Quantities in Tender Documents for environment protection and enhancement, geotechnical works (retaining wall), prestressed concrete, rail tracks and earthworks.

However, the specifications and measurement method for building services still can refer to SMM2. I understood the concept and ability to competently carry out the preparation of the Bills of Quantities for cold water plumbing, sanitary fittings, electrical services, fire protection services and air-condition & ventilation systems.

Assignment 1 - Earthworks(cut & fill)

Mr. Simon had briefed us on our assignment about earthwork (cut and fill). This is a group assignments which consist of 5 persons in a group. We had to complete our assignment in class within 2 hours.

The aims of this assignment:-

  • To enable us read and understand the drawings

  • Able to measure the cut and fill by using Simpson's rule for area calculation

  • To provide Bills of Quantities

  • To obtain cost data for use in thecost planning for other projects

Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities (TGC)

The Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities (TGC) Portfolio is a document that collates all assessments produced in a module and reflects a student’s acquisition of the Module Learning Outcomes and Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities.

disipline specific knowledge

I'm able to put what I learned during lecture class into this assignment.

thinking and problem solving skills

I'm able to think critically while doing this assignment. I also define and analyse problems to arrive at effective solutions.
