Community service initiative

Ms. Tay Shir Men is my community service initiative module's (UCM 60103) lecturer. This module is a 2 credit hours module. Community Service is a form of service learning. Service learning is basically using curriculum to help foster a sense of care and concern among people for their community and the world at large.

More importantly, this module will help develop the personal and social responsibility. I've learnt through participation in a service experience and have the opportunity to use my skills and knowledge in real-life situations. I've been exposed to community needs and experience caring for others and learning about the resources available to me for revitalizing the communities.

Through this module, I've develop basic knowledge and skills in community service strategies, avenues, and techniques, including the art of volunteerism.

assignment (so called community service)

We were requested to find an orphanage in Klang Valley for our community service purpose. 21 of us were combined into a group. We distributed the job title among 21 members. I had been selected as financial controller of whole event. The orphange that we chose to visit is Rumah Juara. Rumah Juara consists of around 45 orphans and 8 stuffs.

Through this event, I'm able to:

  • Develop relevant communication skills for collaborative work with community/society.and/or to work in a career that will make contributions to society.

  • Develop a holistic awareness of the variety of problems (e.g. the environment, poverty, social discrimination) that call for action; critically analyze how such problems should be approached and how to solve them scientifically.

  • Apply information management skills and strengthen their lifelong academic learning.

  • Develop in themselves a strong sense of social responsibility and be able to portray leadership qualities and being able to work effectively as a team.

In game station 1 (Supermarket), the game facilities proposed different games for different ages kids. Those games are including the children have to design their own recycled bag, use the limited amount of money to buy the things listed in the To-Buy-List, calculate the prices of the goods , check the expire date and pay the correct amount.

In police station, the game facilities proposed the criminal videos to the 3-5 years old kids and 16-18 years old teenagers. Game facilities explained the job scopes and responsibilities as a police. “Police catch Robber” game had been carried out for age range from 6 – 15 kids. Lesson learnt are given to the kids. Kids had so much fun during this station.

In hospital station, the game facilities delivered to the children the real situation that happen in a hospital. We had bring the children go through the process of medical checking when they get sick. We had teach them how to taking blood pressure and the method of treating the wound.

In science lab station, several experiments such as volcano eruption expereiment, mixing of oil and water and leakproof bag had been carried out by the game facilities to the kids. Doing science experiment can nurture intellectual curiosity, helping kids acquire new ways of asking questions and understanding the world.

Coffee talk section had been carried out by Vivian and Ding Boon to the children who age ranged from 16 to 18 years old. They gave their own advices on the future of the children and shared their experiences.
