construction technology III

For Construction Technology III module (BLD 60304), our lecturer is still same as semester 2 who is Mr. Chiew Seng Koon. CT III is a 4 credit hours module. The module progresses through the stages of dewatering in basement excavation where water table is high above the basement  floor level; various types of retaining walls, drainage,  roadwork, common industrialized building systems, curtain walls for multi-storey commercial buildings, façade system, prestressing involving pretension and post-tension method, bridge construction, tension membrane roof and steel roof trusses.

learning outcomes

Through this module, I've learnt more about Industrialised Building System and Conventional Method in construction site. IBS system is really better than conventional method based on all the researches. In addition, I also learned to illustrate most aspects of elementary construction with an insight into the techniques applied in large- scale development using standard steel sections and reinforced concrete.

assignment 1 - Sketching

Assignment 1 for construction technology III is sketching. It is an individual assignment. I was requested to sketch 20 drawings related to the syllabus in given templates. After sketching, I am able to recognize the each stafe of the building. The objectives of this assignment are:

  • To develop the ability to apply the complete constructional procedures of the various types of building with suitable materials and design.

  • To illustrate each stage of the building and design process, with carefully labelled with the relevant technical terms.

After finishing this assignment, I'm able to sketch, label and explain in detailed each elemented and component of a building. I'm able to interpret the logical sequences of concepts and alternative construction practices, demonstrating the variation in material applications.

assignment 2 - Video

The group assignment is to produce a video project which proves a degree of accomplishment in each of the requirements identified in the detailed criteria and guidance. Our group has 5 members who are Stephanie Yeoh, Vivian Tan, Cecilia Tie, Cassandra Wong and I. We chose the retaining walls topic to do our video assignment. The video lasts around 20 minutes. We collected the information from YouTube and combined all wanted video. Types of retaining wall that we chose are gabion wall, concrete crib wall, secant pile wall, concrete sleeper wall and gravity retaining wall. My part is concrete crib wall and gravity retaining wall.

Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities (TGC)

The Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities (TGC) Portfolio is a document that collates all assessments produced in a module and reflects a student’s acquisition of the Module Learning Outcomes and Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities.

thinking and problem solving skills

I'm able to think critically while doing this assignment. I also define and analyse problems to arrive at effective solutions.

interpersonal skills

I'm able to understand team dynamics and mobilise the power of teams. Everyone works hard together to finish a video report.
